At this time, school meals will not be free for the 2022-2023 school year.
Why aren’t school meals free in the 2022-2023 school year?
During the pandemic, the USDA knew many people found themselves struggling financially. They did not want school food to be a concern for families. So, at the time they passed waivers allowing all students to have free breakfast and lunch.
As things are slowly getting back to normal, as of today, Congress has not extended these waivers. As a result, the Huntsville School District will be returning to free, reduced, and regularly priced meals.
Full Price breakfast $1.35
Full Price lunch $2.75 (Grades K-5)
Full Price lunch $2.85 (Grades 6-12)
Reduced breakfast $0.30
Reduced lunch $0.40
HSD wants to encourage all families to complete a meal application, even if you don't think you will qualify. You can go to https://bit.ly/3olJVq4 to start your application today.
Please include all household members in one application. You must complete a new application even if you have completed an application in the past school year. Applications are only valid for one school year.
You may also add money to your student’s account by going to www.myschoolbucks.com.
If you need assistance, please contact Tina Nodine, Director of Child Nutrition at 479-738-2414.
Congratulations to Watson Primary School for being selected as one of the Outstanding R.I.S.E Arkansas Schools. They were 1 of only 10 schools in the state of Arkansas to receive this award for excellence in literacy instruction. The school was presented the RISE Award from the Arkansas Department of Education at a special award ceremony this week at the ADE Summit.
In order to be selected for the RISE (Reading Initiative for Student Excellence) Award, schools must prove they are building a culture of reading, creating community partnerships, and sharpening the focus and strength of literacy instruction. A team of ADE Specialists visited the school back in April and spent the whole day observing literacy instruction throughout the building in several different classrooms. A rubric was used to assess if instructional strategies and practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
Watson Primary received a score of 44 out of a possible 48 points. Specialists that visited had the following feedback:
"Watson Primary School was a delight to visit. The principal and instructional facilitator are deeply committed to the students and teachers in their building and it was obvious that they have spent a great deal of time in classrooms improving instruction. The classrooms were inviting and enjoyable. Students were excited about their learning and had very consistent routines of instruction. The teachers were positive, prepared and organized. The lessons were explicit, systematic and engaging. There were social/emotional routines in place and we saw many times when students were able to share with a partner or with the group. We witnessed no management issues and daily schedules were mixed with whole group and small group instruction that centered around assessment data. The core programs were boosted and gaps in materials were closed with lesson planning documents and classroom modeling by
the instructional facilitator. Other teachers could visit this building and come away with a great model of instruction around the science of reading."
SCHOOL'S OUT!!! 🎉 What a great year it has been! We are proud of everything our amazing students and staff have accomplished this year and we can't wait to see you next year (August 15th). Have a GREAT summer, Eagles & Saints 😃🦅⚜️
